But Vankin includes a story called "The Sun Will Bring It to Light", in which a man murders a Jewish person for his money—and in which Vankin recounts that his antisemitism eventually causes the man's downfall; however, to portray this story as the one example of portrayals of Jewish people in the Grimm canon, without context not to mention "Rumpelstiltskin", in which the titular character is grotesque, hook-nosed, fundamentally intimate with gold, and lusts over taking a pure Christian woman's first-born child, which characterization would've been immediately obvious to the Grimms' readers , is nothing short of mendacious, and in turn pernicious because it actively censors the Grimms' stories and motivations, something of which Vankin claims he's trying to do the exact opposite.

The publisher's blurb for The Big Book of Grimm presents the stories as graphic and unexpurgated. But without context, they're not graphic, they're prurient; without context, they're not uncensored, they're outright false.

As I get angry as I write this review, I'm reminded of how the Big Books Of… in general and Jonathan Vankin in particular can and have accomplished so much better with similar efforts, and how as such The Big Book of Grimm is such a harmful failure.

Jan 23, Quentin Wallace rated it really liked it. All of the great fairy tales you remember.. These are the original, more graphic stories and not the usual kid tales we read. Some of the stories were just downright weird, like the one where the father wants to marry his daughter, she flees, he eventually finds her, and they get married and live as husband and wife forever, the end. That was the weirdest one. A few more were out there as well, and there was plenty of gruesome happenings including plenty of cannibalism.

Overall, I really did enjoy this book. The art style in the book differs from story to story, which works for many of the tales in here. If you want more Brothers Grimm, I suggest that you check out one of the compilations of fairy tales that are out on the market, the best of which is The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm.

Not having read the original Grimm faerytales before cracking open this graphic novel, I was intimidated at first, anticipating excrutiating gore and disturbing images that would haunt my dreams However, this was not to be so. The way the Grimms' stories were "channeled" through the 50 or so graphic artists was very digestible, more bizarre than disturbing, at times becoming downright silly.

Every story was very easy to follow in this medium. I liked it!
